SVI Data and Tools Download

The SVI data are in Esri's geodatabase format (mdb). These files may be used in Microsoft Access; Quantum GIS (QGIS), a free, Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS); or in ArcGIS 10.0 or higher. If you’re using an earlier version of ArcGIS, please contact the SVI Coordinator for assistance. Our suggested citation:

Data

2014 Social Vulnerability Index Data

SVI 2014 Documentation

SVI 2014 Tract Shapefile (US) – All US census tracts are ranked against one another. Use for US-wide or multi-state mapping and analysis.

SVI 2014 Tract Shapefile (State-specific) – Census tracts within a state are ranked against one another. Use only for individual state mapping and analysis.

SVI 2014 Tract Text Files – Tract data in tabular format. Use SVI2014_US.csv for US-wide or multi-state analysis. Use individual state tables for state-specific analysis.

Our standard SVI data are at the census tract level. At the request of our users, we provide county-level 2014 SVI databases. Except for the geographic unit, the SVI 2014 Documentation above applies to the county data as well.

SVI 2014 County Shapefile (US) – All US counties are ranked against one another. Use for US-wide or multi-state mapping and analysis.

SVI 2014 County Shapefiles (State-specific) – Counties within a state are ranked against one another. Use only for individual state mapping and analysis.

SVI 2014 County Text Files – County data in tabular format. Use SVI2014_US_CNTY.csv for US-wide or multi-state analysis. Use individual state tables for state-specific analysis.

Tools

American Community Survey Toolbox

Users of ACS data, or any other sample data, cannot ignore the error if they want valid analysis results. In response to these concerns, we developed a geoprocessing toolbox for ArcGIS that enables users to more easily calculate statistical measures of error. The ACS toolbox:
(1) calculates margins of error for user-derived data;
(2) calculates coefficient of variation (CV), a measure of relative error for comparing error across a study area;
(3) determines, using Census specifications, statistically significant difference among enumeration units over space and time; and
(4) helps the user determine a suitable classification scheme considering data uncertainty.

For more information on the ACS Toolbox, please see the "American Community Survey (ACS) Toolbox."

Population Estimator

The Population Estimator is an ArcGIS geoprocessing tool that estimates the population in a user-defined area surrounding a specified feature or features of interest.

For more information on the Population Estimator, please see the "Population Estimator Documentation."
